What Type Of Filter Does My AC Need?

Posted on: 16 January 2017

Any filter will benefit your home, but the type of filter you have and the frequency at which the filter is cleaned has an impact on how clean your AC filters will keep your home. By being informed about the type of filter you need, you will save money while getting the most out of your filter.

Replace Your Filters

A dirty filter will ruin your AC unit's efficiency. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you clean or replace your AC filters regularly. The filter usually needs to be cleaned or replaced at least once a month. If the AC is not efficient enough, not only will this cost you more in electric bills, but it will also cause your AC unit to wear out faster.

Know The Types Of Filters

The type of filter that you choose is important. The filter will come with a minimum efficiency rating. The higher the efficiency number, the better. The highest number is 12. However, the higher the number, the more energy that will be required to circulate air through the filter. When the filter has a rating between 1-4, you will not have air that is very clean. However, if you are looking for a less expensive filter, this is the right option. Filters with a rating between a 5 and 8 are great for reducing the number of allergens in the home, but the filter will also not restrict airflow as much, allowing the AC unit to operate more efficiently. However, if you have severe allergies, you may need a stronger filter with a range of 9-12. When you get into this range, though, you will need to make sure you have an AC unit that has a stronger motor.

There are filters that are stronger than 12, but these are used for unusual circumstances such as in a hospital. For those who are trying to simply keep their homes conditioned, a filter with a rating of 12 is the highest reasonable rating and only for those who suffer from severe allergies.

If your AC unit is not strong enough for the type of filter that you would like to install, it is a good idea to replace your AC unit, when it is no longer functioning properly, with a newer unit that is strong enough to function properly with your filters. While it may be more expensive, the effects that the filters will have on your health will make the added cost worth it.
